Winter Beauty Essentials

Winter really puts my skin through the ringer. I have dry skin to begin with, so once January hits I begin to feel like an alligator. These are my favorite products to battle the winter elements.

1. Korres lip butter: Moisturizes and gives your lips some much needed color.

2. Nars bronzer: Only thing that makes me not look like a ghost!

3. Vaseline: Miracle worker! I use this everywhere in the winter (feet, lips, legs, etc).

4. Rosebud Salve: I love this for my lips and cuticles.

5. Jergens Natural Glow: fakes a summer tan without visiting a harmful tanning bed.

6. Neutrogena Hand Cream: I could not survive without this in the winter.

7. Chapstick Medicated: The only thing that really soothes my chapped lips.

8. Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish: leaves my dry skin feeling silky smooth.

DIY Spray Painted Lamp Shade

I scored a pair of lamps for my bedroom for ten dollars each. The shades weren't my favorite and my original plan was to replace them. Before investing in new lampshades I figured I may as well try something first. After all, what did I have to lose? I turned to every diy'ers best friend, spray paint. Andy sprayed a few coats on for me and it was like a brand new lamp. The lamp still gives off tons of light, and I couldn't have been happier to not have to buy new lamp shades!

Some tips:

1. Use a light hand. More thin coats are better than one heavy, drippy coat.

2. Tape off the inside to shield from overspray.

3. Allow it to dry for a long period of time. You don't want those fumes inside.

Hands down, I'd rather see color over a neutral on the red carpet. But these ladies brought it.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars

I was looking for a quick recipe to try out my new Kitchen Aid Mixer and this one from How Sweet It Is fit the bill. Everything Jess cooks up has been a hit and these are no exception. Chocolate peanut butter perfection.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars: Adapted from How Sweet It Is

Ingredients:

2 sticks of butter, at room temperature

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups flour

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 package peanut butter chips

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 325. Cream butter, peanut butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until fluffy.

2. Add flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Mix until combined.

3. Fold in peanut butter chips. Spread dough in a 9 x 13 baking dish, and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Christmas 2011

Another Christmas has come and gone, and I survived my first hosting gig! Luckily we only had a very manageable five guests, but we survived none the less. I was an epic failure with pictures, but I guess something's gotta give when you are worrying about food temps and filling drinks!

Next up was Christmas morning with Andy's family. We opened gifts and feasted on baked french toast, hash browns, quiche, and cinnamon rolls. These cinnamon rolls were to DIE for. I can't wait to make them again (in my new mixer!!)

We wrapped up our celebration at my Dad's house, eating more food, chasing around my niece, and catching up with family. It was the perfect Christmas. 2012, you have some competition.

I have the rest of the week off so I can't wait to catch up on all your blogs! Hope you all had a great holiday!

Lately, it has been my new water bottle. The 32 oz Camelbak. I don't know what it is about this bottle, but I chug water all day. I only have to refill it twice to get the "recommended" daily intake of water. I feel better too, and I've made it to December (working in a school!) without getting sick. Score one for Camelbak. 1. The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year.

2. Snow makes me giddy for about a month. Once Christmas is over it starts to lose it's luster. Especially when it turns into gray slush and doesn't disappear until March.

3. The best comfort food to eat when it's cold out is a mug of hot chocolate and a big warm breakfast. Waffles, hash browns, and bacon. Yum!

4. Winter is the best time for appreciating loved ones, sharing gifts, baking, and cuddling!

5. I can hardly wait for our annual Christmas cookie exchange.

6. When it comes to holiday gifts I prefer to give them. I love hunting for the perfect gift for each person and seeing their excitement when they open it.

7. If I were to rate my excitement about the holiday season on a scale from 1-10, I would say I am at about a 10. My Christmas shopping is just about done so I'm ready to relax and watch my favorite Christmas movies, bake up some holiday goodies, and enjoy the holiday season!

Candy Buckeyes

Buckeyes are pure Ohio culture. We grew up learning about buckeyes, rooting for the Bucks, and making a candy version during the holidays. This recipe is always a crowd pleaser. Even if you aren't an Ohioan, make these for your next get together. Dip them all the way and you have a truffle!

Buckeyes:

Yield: about 50-60 balls

Ingredients:

1 stick of butter at room temperature

3 cups of powdered sugar

2 cups creamy peanut butter

1 tsp vanilla

Baking chocolate for dipping

Directions:

Cream butter, peanut butter, and vanilla together in a mixing bowl. Slowly add in powdered sugar until incorporated, and the dough sticks together nicely.
Form dough into one inch balls and place on a cookie sheet lined with wax freezer. Pop in the freezer until firm.
Melt baking chocolate in the microwave for 30 second increments until smooth.
Dip peanut butter balls into the chocolate using a toothpick, leaving a small portion of the peanut butter uncovered. Let excess chocolate drip off and place back on the wax paper. Allow chocolate to firm and refrigerate your buckeyes in a covered container.

The Curse of the Jeggings

When I first discovered Gap denim leggings, it was like making a new best friend. They were so comfortable, yet still polished. Who needed regular jeans? Skip ahead months later, when all my beloved jeggings are dirty and I try to squeeze into my old favorites. Uh oh, they must have shrunk in the wash right? Hmm, my shirts also seemed to have that problem lately. Enter a scale. Gulp. But my jeggings still fit! Surely I didn't gain that much weight. Hah, I wish. Lesson learned: it's stretch-less jeans from here on out. Yes, I realize it wasn't just my beloved jeggings fault. I'm looking at you too, cookies and pizza :)

Let me tell you ladies, trying to lost weight during the holiday season...NOT fun! Advice?

Pumpkin Bread

I've wanted to try my hand at pumpkin bread for a long time. After doing some research I decided to try out Paula Deen's recipe, which did not disappoint. The recipe took just minutes to whip together, and the result was a super moist bread with the perfect blend of spices. I will definitely be making this again before fall is over. Enjoy!

Pumpkin Bread: Adapted from Paula Deen Magazine

Yield: 2 loaves

Ingredients:

1 15 oz. can pumpkin

1 cup vegetable oil

2/3 cup water

4 large eggs

3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

3 cups sugar

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350˚F. Grease 2 (8x5-inch) loaf pans. In a medium bowl, beat pumpkin, oil, water, and eggs at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth.

In a separate medium bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Gradually add to pumpkin mixture, stirring to combine.

Pour into pans, and bake for 1 hour, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.

1. My favorite thing about this week was/is I finally started working with students. No more evaluating data!

2. Colder weather makes me want to throw on lots of layers and whip up some comfort food .

3. Three things that make me terribly happy as of late are having a job, working out again, and putting the finishing touches on the apartment (who knew it would take so long?) .

4. If I could only wear one kind of shoe for the rest of my life, I'd choose flat boots for the winter, wedges for the summer. Ballet flats would definitely need to be involved too.

5. My personality type is all over the board. I can be a bit of everything at times. Mostly I try to have a positive attitude and be happy.

6. I have a serious problem resisting chocolate, cookies, pizza, or ice cream. Movie theater popcorn, and Starbucks come in a close second. I wish I had a veggie tooth instead of a sweet tooth.

7. My favorite color to wear is neutrals. White, navy, black, grey, various shades of brown, khaki, army green.

The world works in funny ways. Yesterday I made the decision to actively begin pursuing alternative careers...In other words, let my dream of teaching go. Today I get a call from my elementary school principal and she offers me a job on the spot. I will be working as an math and reading intervention tutor for third through fifth grade. While it's only a long-term position until April, I'm hoping this will pave my way for the next school year. Celebrations are in order!

Seattle has always been on my bucket list, and it was even better than I had imagined. I was amazed with the amount of unique restaurants, cafes, and bakeries scattered about the city.

I also loved Steelhead Diner, Mor Mor, and Bakery Nouveau, which I didn't manage to snap.

There is a reason the word eat is in Seattle. Yum!

Straight hair is my go-to. Unfortunately for me, my trusty Sedu has finally kicked the bucket, and I'm looking for an upgrade. I've heard rave reviews about the ghd, but I'm nervous that it's the new Chi. Trendy, expensive, but unimpressive. (I found the Chi to really pull at my hair). So here's my dilemma. Do I stick with what I know works for me, or give the ghd a try?

The Glee Project

Even though the second season of Glee was ho-hum, I somehow got sucked into it's sister reality show, The Glee Project. I'm not going to lie, it's a̶l̶m̶o̶s̶t̶ better than Glee. Think Glee meets Idol. Of course this means I'll have to tune into the next season of Glee just so I can see the winner in action. (Can I use the word Glee more? Glee!)

My favorite contestant by far has been the delightfully nerdy, Cameron Mitchell. He's going places and yes, I will follow him there. Just listen, and then get sucked into watching all of his performances.

Am I the only one watching this? Don't answer that...

There's Always Next Year....

If Edison can't inspire me, I don't know who can! But, I've decided I'm not giving up on this ol' teaching career of mine just yet. Next Friday I say goodbye to my favorite little preschoolers and continue the oh so joyous adventures of substitute teaching. Third times the charm right?

ps. In other exciting news Andy and I found an apartment! All my spare time will be devoted to packing and organizing until August 19th, our official move-in date!! I promise Cancun pictures soon too!

Beach Reading

I had the chance to cross a few books off my summer reading list in Cancun. I seem to do my best reading on the beach. There is no better setting for digging into a good book than under the shade with waves crashing nearby.

First up, Lunch in Paris. I (not surprisingly) adored this book. As far as memoirs go, this one is romantic and interesting without being too self-indulgent. Plus, it is chock full of unique recipes. I'm itching to return to Paris more than ever!

Next, is The History of Love. I blew through this in a day and I can't even put it into words. I want to read it again. Joanna put it best when she said this is the type of book you hug. Just read it.

This has been on my bookshelf for a few years now, and for some reason I just kept passing by it. I'm so happy I finally gave it a chance. This tale of three women, with three unique problems, sucked me in right from the start. I think everyone could find someone to relate to in this book. Definitely worth a read.

You guys know I love True Blood... I've heard mixed reviews about the book series, so I thought I'd give it a try. No go. I just couldn't get into it. It's hard to read a story when scenes from the show keep popping in my head. I hate to give up on books, but I think this is just one I'm going to have to let go.

If there's one thing I'm learning as I get older, it's that nothing goes according to the plan. Unfortunately, I wasn't selected to become a teacher this year. Sigh. I'm trying to look at this in the most positive way I can... I get to press the reset button on my career. At the same time, it is hard to let go of the dream that I worked so hard for. Thank you for all your continued support. It means the world to me! If all else fails, I'm moving to Paris :)

Summer Reading List
